so we’ll take this special day to thank you!
Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to tell
someone you love how much you appreciate them.
And thinking about insurance, are you covered and prepared?
Does your life insurance policy have sufficient coverage
to support your family in the unfortunate event of death?
Are those you love protected? Lots of questions, and we have answers!

You are required by law to have liability insurance: basically, this protects people from going after your assets (house, savings, etc.) if you're found at fault for an accident.

2. The minimum liability amounts are very low, $5,000 for property damage (fixing/replacing the vehicle of the other involved), $15,000 per person injured (covers their medical expenses), BUT only a total of $30,000 in medical expenses for those covered (e.g., if a whole family is injured in an accident and their medical expenses are $100,000, your insurance company only gives them the $30,000).

3. With the above info in mind, the minimum liability insurance is definitely lacking. There is more coverage available such as:
a. Physical Damage: whether its collision or comprehensive, your vehicle will be covered no matter whose fault an accident is.

b. Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist: protects you from those people who have no insurance or whose coverage is insufficient to cover all the damage

c. Medical Payments: again, no matter whose fault the accident is, medical expenses will be covered

d. Riders: you can add coverage to your policy for any "extras" like an expensive after-market stereo & speakers

Why should you care? Well, like me, you probably have a family member or friend (if not yourself!) who is around the age that Medicare benefits kick in. So, I wanted to summarize what I learned.

Anyone who payed into Social Security payroll taxes for at least 40 quarters (ten years) is eligible for Medicare when they turn 65.

Medicare is not full health coverage: there are deductibles & out of pocket expenses.

Medicare Supplements are available to cover the gaps in Medicare.

Medicare Advantage is a plan that replaces Medicare and offers full coverage.

Depending on what your circumstances, there are different plans to suit your financial & medical needs.

Here is a video about the differences between Medicare Supplements & Medicare Advantage:

Drive at a cautious speed, especially in rain or snow.

On cold nights, ensure that pipes won’t freeze.

Especially around the holiday season, be sure your house is locked and secure.

Before the thunderstorms hit, make sure there aren’t any trees that could damage your home.

Winter is a time of snowball fights and snowman building, not auto insurance claims and hospital visits. Five great tips to get you to your destination with little stress are:

1. Drive courteously. You should already be driving in a safe and courteous manner, but the winter months are even more reason to respect your fellow driver. Things like driving with your lights on when it is snowing, merging left so oncoming traffic can get on the freeway easily, and even stopping at a red light with a car length of space between you and the vehicle in front of you are all courteous things you can do. Remember, nobody wants to deal with auto insurance hikes due to careless driving, or you just being mean on the road.

2. Have your car inspected. You should have your car inspected before the weather gets very rough. Having properly functioning breaks will only help in keeping you on the roads and out of the auto insurance agent’s office. Those of you who will drive in real cold climates should have your antifreeze checked as well. It is cheaper to pay for a full car checkup than it is to pay the fees of an accident, or hikes in your auto insurance due to issues on the road.

3. Get appropriate tires. Winter tires may not have you taking corners like an Indy car, but they can keep you on the road and out of an auto insurance headache. There are tires geared for snow, and even some designed to handle ice. Getting tires that are designed for your most common driving conditions not only give you a leg up on Mother Nature, but they can also help you with simple driving tasks like climbing a snow-covered hill. Some states may even stress tire chains. If your state allows these, be sure you have them and know how to install them. The last thing you want to do is find yourself fighting these devices in the middle of a blizzard.

4. Take a winter driving course. One of the simplest things you can do is take a winter driving course every year. You maybe a skilled winter driver, but a refresher course never hurts. The most you lose out on is a bit of your time. Taking a winter driving course may even save you some money on your auto insurance policy. These courses are very beneficial for everyone from the new driver to the oldest driver in the family.

5. Drive below your abilities. You may have 30 years under you belt for driving in adverse condition, but that is no reason not to be cautious. Driving below your abilities are simple things like driving slower, keeping both hands on the wheel, keeping a safe distance between you and your fellow driver, or just not driving if you feel hesitant about safety. Nobody can ever fault you for opting out of driving in the interest of safety.
</a10:content>

The 7 Most Common Auto Insurance Claims

You’re like most folks in that you don’t want to face higher auto insurance premiums than absolutely necessary. You do what you can to drive defensively. You work hard to make sure you obey all of the traffic laws. You even take a refresher safety course every now and again, just to get that little extra discount that your auto insurance company offers. Still, there’s always the risk that you’ll eventually need to file a claim.

Knowing what the most common auto insurance claim types are can help you to make a serious effort to avoid some of those situations. Here are the 7 most common auto insurance claims today:

Fender benders. A small accident that usually involves another vehicle in which no one is hurt and the damage is under a few hundred bucks falls into this category. Believe it or not, this kind of claim can increase your premiums.

Whiplash. It’s often the butt of jokes in the movies, but whiplash can involve some serious medical costs. A whiplash collision claim is especially common, as it only requires a jerking neck motion.

Back injuries. Back injuries are the next most common type of injury claim in an auto accident, after whiplash. Back injuries can range from something as simple as a strained back muscle to something more severe like a slipped disk.

Windshield damage. Windshield damage can be caused by accidents, or it can happen when a rock goes flying out from under the car in front of you. This kind of claim has a high deductible usually, and is a fairly expensive repair.

Theft. Many auto insurance companies will give you a discount on your premiums if you install extra security systems, as theft of a vehicle will often lead to a much higher insurance rate.

Vandalism. Depending on where you live, vandalism might be an issue as well. If reports of vandalism are high in your area, you can expect to pay more for your auto insurance.

Animal collisions. Even if you don’t live in a rural area, it’s possible to run into a deer or other animal in the road. These kinds of accidents often create tremendous amounts of damage to your vehicle.

While you can’t avoid all of the situations that might lead to these kinds of auto insurance claims, knowing what they are can help put you on the lookout for situations that might lead to these disasters.
</a10:content>

Your First Auto Insurance Policy

When you’re dreaming about that first car, you’re probably not really thinking too much about that first auto insurance policy. The fact of the matter is that your choice of auto insurance companies and policies is nearly as important, if not more important, than the choice of your first car. Because new drivers are at such a higher risk of accidents, you need to be sure that the policy you choose will take care of you if anything happens.

The basics

It’s helpful, first of all, is to understand what auto insurance is, what it does for you and why you need to have it. When you have an accident, there are going to be significant costs involved. From the cost of repairing the vehicles involved to the medical costs that may come as a result of the accident, you’re responsible for the damage that you cause. Auto insurance provides you with a way to take care of the financial obligations that come from an auto accident.

Most people can’t afford to take the financial responsibility for an accident. That’s why it’s mandatory in all 50 states for drivers to carry auto insurance. If you don’t have insurance, you can get a ticket or, in some cases, even lose your license.

Understanding the policy

Auto insurance policies are complex. You need to start off with a solid base of knowledge when you start looking for coverage. This website is a great resource for learning about auto insurance. You can also talk to an insurance agent, and they can explain what kinds of products it is that they offer. They can also help you find a policy that is affordable to you.

You’re going to pay more

It’s expensive for young, new drivers to get auto insurance. You’re going to pay more for your policy than drivers who’ve been on the road for a couple of decades. That said, you shouldn’t pay more than you have to. Make sure to do some comparison shopping. Make sure you know how much it will cost to insure a given car before you actually buy it. Ask your insurance agents about what kinds of discounts you might qualify for. Just because you’re going to pay more than older folks doesn’t mean that you have to pay too much.

Ultimately, your choice of auto insurance policies can make a significant difference in your budget and, if there’s an accident, in your ability to continue driving. Make sure to take the time to understand your insurance policy options and to pick the one that’s the best fit for you
</a10:content>
